A Trip to the Yule Witches Market
Taking break from discussing writing to share some thoughts about the Yule witches market.
Yule is a significant midwinter festival with deep historical roots, primarily linked to the winter solstice. Derived from the Old English word “geol,” Yule is celebrated around December 21st or 22nd, marking the shortest day and longest night of the year. This period symbolizes the gradual return of longer days, along with hope and renewal amidst winter’s darkness.
Traditionally, ancient communities celebrated Yule with feasting and merriment, honoring deities of fertility and the sun through various rituals to ensure the return of light. Notable symbols include the Yule log, a large oak log burned for warmth and hospitality, and evergreen decorations, like holly and mistletoe, which represented life and resilience while warding off evil spirits.
As Christianity spread in Europe, Yule customs were integrated into Christmas celebrations, transforming practices like the Christmas tree and gift-giving into key holiday elements. Recently, modern neo-pagan and Wiccan communities have revived Yule celebrations, emphasizing themes of rebirth and nature.
In Wiccan tradition, Yule is celebrated as a lesser Sabbat, marking a pivotal moment in the seasonal cycle. During this time, the Holly King has reached the peak of his power. Meanwhile, the Crone Goddess has successfully completed her journey to the Underworld in search of her beloved Oak King. As dawn breaks on Yule, the Goddess gives birth to the Sun, who is the reincarnation of the Oak King. In the aftermath of this miraculous event, the Goddess, physically drained, retreats into a deep slumber.
It is customary to light candles and bonfires on Yule Eve, a ritual meant to beckon the Sun’s return at daybreak. On this sacred day, the Oak King and Holly King engage in a symbolic battle, during which the Oak King fatally wounds his counterpart. As a result, the power of the Holly King begins to wane, although he does not perish immediately. At this moment, darkness still holds sway over the Earth, but its influence diminishes with the birth of the Sun, signaling the gradual return of light and warmth.
At the Yule market, while there were vendors and snacks, the standout moment for me was witnessing two women practicing divination by throwing bones. This experience of getting a bone reading helped me focus my intentions for 2025, fostering personal growth in dance and writing while actively seeking connections with agents. So, get ready world, here I come!
